Among the myriad of laws currently in force are the Human
Rights and the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act. These laws
are enforced to protect the rights of mothers, their children, and anyone who
falls under them. In ancient times, women had no right to any of their spouse's
property. They are only expected to stay in their respective homes, run the
household and take care of the child.
Women are not able to realize their full potential to rise
in their lives and dream big. Instead of being free in their society, they
become slaves to their society because they are denied even the right to vote
and are not given access to it. But there is a woman who is fed up with this
business and has thought of leading a movement aimed at rebelling and revolting
against the nations that occupy and enslave our country. She is Gabriela
Silang, an Ilocano. Along with her husband Diego Silang, she led the Ilocano
Independence Movement. Although the battle her husband left behind was
unsuccessful, many were amazed at her courage and bravery as she faced and led
thousands of Spanish troops. Because of her bravery, the GABRIELA party was
formed.
GABRIELA is one of the political parties here in the
Philippines that stands against Human Rights, mistreatment, abuse, and other
violence against women. They protect the rights of women against those who
abuse them. They are also a good example of women's empowerment. Their gender
is not a reason to be silent on the issues that both women and our country
face. They show their intelligence, bravery, and courage by being the face and
voice of all women who are unable to complain and open up about their
experiences. They show that no matter your gender, you have the right to speak
out and live without experiencing discrimination.
Gender discrimination, especially against women, is punishable by law. But we must not be satisfied that the issues that are raised are punished accordingly. Thus, by empowering women, we can convey to the majority that women have their own opinions. Also, because of the heroic act of Gabriela Silang back then, women became aware of their rights, which led them to push their movement forward. Not only women should join this movement but all people because it is not only fighting for the rights of women but also for the rights and welfare of all people.
