During the
Spanish-American War, Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the
Philippines. However, after the United States annexed the country, Aguinaldo
lost his hopes for independence. Aguinaldo and his men fled the country in
1897. In exchange for their freedom, they agreed to exile in Hong Kong.
The
Philippines, a large archipelago of islands off Southeast Asia, had been under
Spanish rule in the 16th century. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
the country's resistance to the Spanish began to brew. In 1892, a revolutionary
society called Katipunan was formed in Manila. With the government of the
Philippines at the time, in which Aguinaldo was the president, the agreement
with the United States to liberate the country once they exile in Hong Kong did
not go as smoothly as one would think. One war after another, the Philippines
was like a basketball ball that they alternately take and conquer. Filipinos
continued to fight for independence even though they were far inferior to the
invading countries just in terms of military strength.
Revolutionary
groups like the KKK or Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng
Bayan, the Silang Revolt, and the novels of Dr. Jose Rizal proved that there is
no particular gender and any specific ways when it comes to fighting for the
independence of the beloved country. The novels of Rizal helped open the minds
of Filipinos who had been brainwashed by Spanish colonization and helped them
understand the rights that had been taken away from them. During the
revolutions of the revolutionary societies, they showed the strength of the
Filipinos and their strong will to get back what was taken from them.
During the
struggle for our independence, many soldiers from the United States, our
country, and civilians were killed. Our national hero and other famous heroes
of our country were also killed during this process. We must not forget that
they sacrificed their lives for us and our independence. Without their bravery
and will, we would not be able to call the Philippines "our" country.
That is why it is significant for us to remember their sacrifices during our
independence celebration.
